How I Prepared My Body to Get Pregnant at 39 (And What I’d Do Again)

Getting pregnant at 39 wasn’t something I rushed into.

Turan and I were on the fence about having a second baby for a long time. Like… awhileeee.

I went to therapy about it.
Then I read the books.
And of course, I listened to the podcasts.

We swung from:

one and done → maybeeee? → okay… let’s do this.

And looking back, I’m deeply grateful for that space.

That time allowed me to prepare my body intentionally, calmly, and without panic so that when we decided to try, I felt confident, not frantic.

If you’re wondering:

  • Can I get pregnant at 38, 39, or 40?
  • How do I prepare my body for pregnancy naturally?
  • What labs actually matter for fertility?

This post is for you.

Can You Get Pregnant at 39?

Yes. And also… it depends.

Age matters. However, health matters more than most people realize.

Fertility is influenced by gut health, hormone balance, inflammation, nutrient status, blood sugar regulation, toxin exposure, sleep, stress, and nervous system health. This is why so many women feel like they’re “doing everything right” and still struggling.

My approach wasn’t about chasing fertility hacks. Instead, it was about building a solid foundation.

The Functional Fertility Tests I Chose (And Why)

I completed these tests gradually between 2023 and 2024 before we started trying. Not everyone needs all of them, but each one gave me clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.

GI-MAP Stool Test (For Me and Turan)

Gut health plays a massive role in fertility. My GI-MAP helped me:

  • Lower H. pylori, which can impair nutrient absorption and impact fertility
  • Confirm non-celiac gluten sensitivity (le sigh)
  • Heal leaky gut and calm inflammation

As a result, healthy digestion supports hormone metabolism, immune balance, and nutrient absorption, all essential for conception.

DUTCH Hormone Test

As a result, this test confirmed:

  • Strong estrogen production for ovulation
  • Adequate progesterone to support early pregnancy
  • Balanced cortisol levels after prior dysregulation
Because of this, seeing the data gave me confidence that my hormones were ready to support conception.

Comprehensive Bloodwork

Additionally, bloodwork helped rule out common fertility roadblocks, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Thyroid imbalances
  • Blood sugar dysregulation
  • Nutrient deficiencies

These are often overlooked but incredibly impactful.

Total Tox Burden Test

This test gave me peace of mind after previously having high mercury levels.

  • Minimal mold exposure (even after a moldy LA apartment)
  • Low levels of glyphosate and endocrine disruptors like BPA
Therefore, lowering toxin load reduces stress on the liver and hormone pathways.

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

Meanwhile, this test assessed mineral status heading into pregnancy, which is incredibly mineral-depleting.

  • Identified imbalances
  • Revealed elevated uranium levels that I supported detoxing

Nutrition for Fertility After 35

My nutrition goals were simple and powerful:

  • Stable blood sugar
  • Low inflammation
  • Deeply nutrient-dense foods
In fact, for many women optimal fertility actually requires gaining a little weight. For me, that looked like about three pounds.

Fertility-Supportive Foods I Ate Regularly

  • Eggs (yolks included)
  • Grass-fed meats, poultry, seafood, tofu, and legumes
  • SMASH fish (sardines, mackerel, anchovies, salmon, herring)
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Organic fruits and vegetables
  • Avocado
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes, whole grains, legumes, and fruit
  • Fermented foods such as yogurt, kefir, kimchi, and sauerkraut
  • Full-fat dairy

Ultimately, food is information. And consistent nourishment signals safety to the body.

Lifestyle Habits That Supported Fertility

Nothing fancy — just consistent habits.

  • 7–9 hours of sleep per night
  • Circadian rhythm support with morning light and consistent meal timing
  • Daily movement including walking, yoga, and weight lifting
  • Nervous system regulation (this is huge)
  • Gratitude and manifestation practices
  • Lower-tox living by filtering water, avoiding single-use plastics, and choosing cleaner personal care

Fertility thrives in a regulated nervous system.

Supplements for Fertility at 39

Over two years, my focus gradually shifted from gut healing to hormone balance, gentle detox, and finally fertility support.

If you’re thinking about trying in the next 3–6 months, these are my universal foundations:

  • High-quality prenatal (for both partners)
  • Egg quality support
  • Omega-3 fatty acids
  • Probiotic
  • Magnesium glycinate
  • Electrolytes

Supplement needs are always individualized, but these form a strong base.

The Results

By May 2024, I felt the best I ever had.

  • Digestion was calm and consistent.
  • My cycles were regular and symptom-free.
  • Energy levels felt balanced.
  • Sleep was finally solid again.

I knew we were ready.

At 39, with an AMH of 0.33, I expected it could take a while.

To our surprise, we got pregnant the second month of trying.

Nine months later, Blair was born.

Preparing Your Body for Pregnancy at Any Age

I know how lucky we were. And I also know how much intention went into preparing my body.

If you’re:

  • Thinking about trying → it’s never too early to prepare
  • Ready to be pregnant yesterday → it’s never too late to support your health
  • On a fertility journey → this work can be deeply supportive

In 2025 alone, we helped 12 women get pregnant and deliver healthy babies.
