Why Supplements Aren’t The Solution
1. You’re Not Mastering the Foundations First
I say this with love—because I’ve been there too.
When I was working 50+ hours in a PR job, shredding for my wedding at Barry’s, and in school to become an RD, my foundations slipped. And it showed up in my health: SIBO, estrogen dominance, headaches, and crippling fatigue.
In retrospect with years of clinical experience, I can confidently say:
A pill won’t make up for not chewing your food, skipping meals, sleeping 6 hours a night, or doing Barry’s Bootcamp 6x a week.
You can take all the magnesium, probiotics, and greens powders in the world…
But if your nervous system is stuck in “go mode,” you’re inflamed, and your blood sugar is swinging all day, no supplement can override that.
First, prioritize:
- Circadian rhythm
- 3 full meals a day
- Rest and recovery
- Blood sugar balance
- Proper hydration and minerals
You can’t supplement your way out of an unregulated lifestyle.
When my client C started my health foundations course, THRIVE, she was on medication for Hashimoto’s, constantly fatigued as a busy mom, and felt super inflamed. After just 28 days of prioritizing the foundations (vegetables, hydration, chewing her food), here’s what she shared:
“Thank you so much for everything! This has been so great – I got off the Hashimoto’s medicine and I’m feeling so much better!”
She didn’t add in any new supplements, she just focused on the foundations.
2. Most Supplements Are Poor Quality And May Not Even Contain What They Claim
The supplement industry isn’t tightly regulated. Even buying trusted brands on Amazon can be risky. Right now, it’s a bit of the Wild West. That means:
- The capsule you’re taking might not contain the dose it claims
- Fillers, preservatives, or cheap ingredients may be hidden in the formula
- Some products are stored, shipped, and sold in ways that degrade potency
- Influencer “wellness” brands often use private labeling without transparency
Many brands don’t use the most absorbable form because it costs more
This is why I only use and recommend medical-grade supplements from manufacturers that:
- Follow cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices)
- Are audited regularly for quality and potency
- Use NSF-registered warehouses
- Sell directly through regulated practitioner platforms like Fullscript (my preferred dispensary), instead of third-party resellers
That $40 “bloat pill” on TikTok? Probably doesn’t meet these standards.

3. Your Supplements Aren’t Personalized to You
No two bodies or symptoms are the same. So why are we all taking the same acne clearing supplement?
That random de-bloat pill your friend swears by, or the hormone-balancing elixir you saw on Instagram might not be right for your body, and could actually be making things worse.
This is especially true if:
- You have underlying gut imbalances (that probiotic could feed the wrong bacteria)
- You’re unknowingly depleting your hormones (high cortisol and low cortisol can feel the same)
- Your liver or detox pathways are sluggish (supplements are just MORE for your liver to detox)
- You don’t actually need what’s in the greens powder (no one REALLY needs adaptogens, prebiotics, probiotics, vitamins AND minerals)
The BEST way to know what supplements your body needs?

Until then, you’re guessing. And guessing with supplements = expensive pee and potentially harmful ingredients that may make you feel worse.
Like my 1:1 client M, who had acne and PCOS. She assumed her symptoms were due to high estrogen and testosterone so had been taking an acne supplement with DIM (decreases estrogen) and drinking spearmint tea (decreases testosterone) for a year. But when we tested her hormones with a DUTCH test, she was actually so LOW in estrogen and testosterone that she had lost her cycle and wasn’t even ovulating. Whoopsie!
This is always why I say test, don’t guess!

And it’s definitely not another protocol ChatGPT handed you.
